Ishvara was born in Missouri in 1945. He was raised in a fundamentalist religious faith. After being involved in church ministry at a young age, he became frustrated with the limitations of belief. He began a quest for truth that led him to explore the great scriptures of the world, but he continually found limitations and contradictions in the interpretations of the core truths. For ten years he owned a metaphysical bookstore in Lincoln City, Oregon, where he gave talks and led weekly meditation classes. He became widely known for his wisdom and gentle way of teaching. In 1987, he had a profound experience of awakening. At a time when he was emotionally upset, his mind suddenly came to a halt, in total stillness and presence. In this stillness, Ishvara became aware of who he is, never to return to the conditional way of life. Since then he has been focused, moment by moment, on fully expressing his life as an unlimited, unconditional being with an awareness to which anyone can awaken.   A striking aspect of Ishvara’s awakening is the fact that it has occurred without the guidance of any teacher, tradition or lineage. He translates his direct experience of The Consciousness into words, speaking with simple realism, not with polished rhetoric. In 1987 Ishvara founded a non-profit spiritual organization now known as Alaya. Alaya honors the core truths that are present in all scriptures and spiritual paths, but does not adhere to the beliefs, systems, dogmas, and structures of conventional spiritual traditions and religions. Alaya® is dedicated to the continual awakening of the highest consciousness as brought forth by Ishvara. In 1995, in response to numerous requests from disciples and seekers of truth, Ishvara moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico. He established the Alaya community to provide an ongoing, uninterrupted, transformative Space for the expression of The Consciousness. Drama and struggle come to an end in this Space of total allowing. Students and friends from all over the world attend events with Ishvara, listen to cassette tapes of these events, dialog with him by phone or e-mail, and come to Alaya® House to be with him in the unconditional space of The Consciousness.
